Besides the torrent of rain we’ve been subjected to recently, I’m so happy that we’re now nearly three weeks into Autumn.
It is my favourite season because despite the weather, it is full of warmth and cosiness.
I love the rich orange, red and yellow colours of the changing leaves, the crunch of shells beneath my feet, the kids running up and down one of nearby roads collecting conkers, the history of big events like Halloween and Bonfire Night… It’s really beautiful to me and especially living in a semi-rural village, that natural beauty is everywhere.
However, we did not come here for an exposé on why I love Autumn. We came here for some of my personal comforts that I reserve for this time of year because they are a match made in heaven!
I love hot chocolate. Done with milk and not water (yuck), it is one of my favourite drinks. When it is creamy, rich, and swirly in the mug, it is almost decadent and I can’t think of anything better than savouring it with a book, relaxing on a comfy chair, next to a crackling fire. And now it seems ever better because there will be a cute, springer spaniel puppy at my feet. It just screams autumn!
Homemade carrot and coriander soup.
Now I’ve mentioned it, it’s all I want to eat and cook right now. I love soup at this time of year anyway but carrot and coriander is my favourite for the flavours and the warmth that just radiates from it. I always make it big batches too so I can keep some in the freezer for those days I just don’t fancy cooking.
Particularly when they’re blankets I’m making in one go rather than sewing squares together. I get to a certain point in the process of the blankets when they’re big enough to cover my knees and I love it so much because it keeps me warm whilst I’m making it. It’s too uncomfortable to make blankets like these in summer so it is perfect to leave them until autumn when the weather is cooler and the warmth is cosy rather than stifling. I cannot wait until my current blanket WIP (the Nature’s Walk CAL by Cherry Heart and Black Sheep Wools) is sewn together and lying over my lap whilst I work on the border. It is also the epitome of autumn and it is just going to be absolutely beautiful!
All the photos and videos from the Disney Parks’ Halloween seasons.
Like most of France, I’m not that big into Halloween as a celebration. I prefer the traditional Harvest celebrations that we have and I’ve loved since childhood, and I really like the fact Disneyland Paris takes that as inspiration for their seasonal celebration. Yes, the villains are also front and centre for the spooky, supernatural side to Halloween and they are a main draw for people, but it’s not what captures my attention. I could listen to this soundtrack and the song “Vive la Vie” all day, and when I’m not, I will sing it everywhere in the house because I love it. It’s incredibly catchy and brightens up a dull day. Not going to lie, it’s probably what has saved me from the craziness of being stuck inside by all the torrential rain recently.
Plus, it is Disney and when is Disney not one of my go-to comforts?
All the great book releases!
I don’t know if it is just me, but most of my anticipated books for the year come out during Autumn. Right now we’ve got The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E Harrow, The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman, The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh, Doing Time by Jodi Taylor, Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen… My bookshelves (physical and Kindle) are always bursting with the pre-orders from Autumn. It’s just such a great time to get new books and dive into new or familiar worlds. I’m excited and completely full of bookish goodness!
As you’ve figured, I love this time of year. It’s natural magic at work. And now I am craving the warmth of that hot chocolate I mentioned.
I think that means it is time to sign off for the time being.
What are your go-to Autumn comforts?
If you are an Autumn person, what do you like about this time of year?
As always, thanks for reading and have a brazzle dazzle day!
