Mid-Year Freak Out Tag 2018

By now, you can guarantee that nearly every book blogger and booktuber will have done this tag by now. It’s a book blogging staple, very much like the unpopular opinions tag which is everywhere.

I know I am a few weeks late to the scene, but guess what, I always am. Anyone who follows this blog knows and has come to expect that. In any case, following the crowd is a little passé.

Anyway, I wasn’t tagged by anyone to do this. I just thought it would be a good post to write up and I am a little low on new ideas at the moment.

So, are we ready to freak out?

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far?

Right, I hope you know by now that a one-book answer doesn’t exist to a question like this.

All these were obviously 5 stars for me and they blew me away with their plots, characters, and general storytelling. I also didn’t expect An Ember in the Ashes or Wing Jones to be as good as I’d heard, so it was a nice surprise to discover that they exceeded my highest expectations.

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far?

The only sequels I can think of that I’ve read for the first time are those in the Chronicles of St Mary’s series.

These aren’t in the right order and I’m certain I’ve missed off Lies, Damned Lies and History, but wow these books just constantly up the ante. Max did bug me a little with her carelessness in the last one but holy moly, there’s always something happening that blows your mind. I don’t know how Jodi Taylor does it but I applaud her for constantly making the series seem fresh and exciting.

3. New Release You Haven’t Yet Read But Want To?

I’m going to limit myself to a one-book answer:

I need to read this when I’m in the right mood for it so I’m thinking it might be a while before I get to it. It sounds amazing though and everywhere I see it whether that be online or in a book store, there’s nothing but praise for it.

4. Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half Of The Year?

I have a post talking about these books currently in the works but I suppose there’s no harm in spoiling one of the books.

Strange the Dreamer was one of my favourite books last year and I am super excited to see what happens in this book. I’ve stated this before but I cannot get enough of Laini Taylor’s writing and I need this book in my hands now!

6. Biggest Surprise?

I honestly didn’t expect to love this as much as I did. It was twisted, gothic, and unbelievably good. I wrote a full review of this earlier on in the year if you want to check it out and I guarantee that will make much more sense than ramblings in this post.

7. Favourite New To You/Debut Author?

Let’s see:

  • Sabaa Tahir,
  • Katherine Webber,
  • Lydia Ruffles,
  • Laura Steven, and
  • Clémentine Beauvais.

8. Newest Fictional Crush?

Conor from Goodbye Perfect by Sara Bernard is certainly someone you would find me crushing over. He was very nice, sweet and I found myself relating to him a lot.

9. Newest Favourite Character?

Elias from An Ember in the Ashes.

10. Book That Made You Cry?

I re-read this in January after the new BBC mini-series came out and that one damned scene always gets to me.

11. Book That Made You Happy?

This is a novella but I’m always exceedingly happy to be back in the Shadowhunter world! And this one has all the characters from TID so of course it makes me happy because they’re my favourite!

12. Favourite Book To Film Adaptation?

I’ve not watched any so far this year. I nearly did put the new Little Women BBC mini-series but that came out in December so doesn’t count.

13. Favourite Post You Have Done This Year?

I really liked the UK vs US covers post I did a few weeks ago. It was nice to find out that I’m not particularly biased to the UK covers since I am UK based.

I also liked re-discovering the characters voiced by Sterling Holloway.

14. Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year?

There are many but I think this one certainly trumps them all.

It’s gorgeous.

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End Of The Year?

The simple answer – too many! I’m such a massive mood reader though and that makes it difficult to pick up the books calling out to be read.

That is the end of this rather long tag and I’m not going to tag anyone because like I said at the beginning, nearly everyone will have done this by now. However if you haven’t and you want to, consider yourself tagged.

As always,

Thanks for reading and have a brazzle dazzle day!

    1. I’m certainly hoping to pick up Circe in the next half of the year but we’ll see what happens. It’s a bit of an ambitious read for me though because I’ve not really read anything about Greek Mythology outside of the first Percy Jackson book.

  1. Too many books to read to list them. I know that feel. I only did this tag a couple days ago because it was only mid year a few days ago so you’re not late everyone else was just really early?
