Down the TBR Hole #16

Down The TBR Hole

Hello!

It has been quite a while coming, but welcome back to Down the TBR Hole, the meme created by Lia at Lost in a Story to help sort out and cleanse our TBRs!

Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when youre scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well thats going to change!

I have not done this for a while because I thought I’d got to the stage where my to-read shelf was down to a manageable size. Although the number of books has increased slightly, I have come to the realisation that I might not get to reading some of the books and I’d rather have books on there that I own (physically or on my Kindle)

It works like this:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if youre feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I’ve always done 10 books for this challenge so that’s the way I’ll keep it. And I’m going all the way back to the beginning so it is likely that some of the books will be the same as before.

Anyway, here goes…

The Magician’s Apprentice by Trudi Canavan

This is one book I have on my shelf, and it has been there for a while too. I never seem tempted to pick it up because it is rather chunky, but it is something I do really want to read.

Decision – keep

I also have this on my shelf, in fact, I have the entire trilogy. I think I did actually read this a few years ago on my Kindle and really liked it, but I don’t remember anything about it.

So, it is high time I do something about that.

Decision – keep

Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss

Another book conveniently living on my bookshelf. I’ve had every intention this year of picking this up and flicking through it when I’ve had the chance but unfortunately, it has never arisen.

I think if I do read it, it will only be a few pages at a time.

Decision – go

The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld

As this is one book I took off my shelves a while ago, it is one that I’m not inclined to read at the moment. I haven’t got rid of it, it’s now stored in the corner gap between my two shelves – the gap that houses all my demoted books aka, those I’ve removed off my shelves to make way for new books.

I may get to this at some point, but not right now.

Decision – go

Aliocha by Henri Troyat

So it’s not as if I haven’t already read this particular French book as it was my set text for A-Level French, but as I liked it, it is one I would like to read again.

The only thing is, I’ve not been reading any French books recently and every time I have tried, I’ve just put them down.

Decision – go for now. I may add it again later.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

I remember one of my friend’s recommending this to me a few years ago and I’ve still not read it. I think this is one book I do have on my kindle but as I’ve got around to tackling all of my books on there, it has been untouched. I really do have every intention of reading it at some point though because I have heard lots of good things about it and it does sound like something I’d want to read.

Decision – keep

The Shadow Queen by C.J.Redwine.

Fairytale retelling of Snow White. I should be all over this. However, I have been reading quite a few retellings over the last few months and this keeps slipping my mind. I’m not even sure if I have it on my kindle or not.

I think I might pass on this one.

Decision – go

A Tyranny of Petticoats, edited by Jessica Spotswood.

YA, heroines, a journey through history, short stories – I should be all over this book yet it has been unread for ages.

Whether it is on my Kindle, I’m not sure. If not, I will rectify that soon because I am all for short story anthologies, especially if a couple of my favourite YA authors have contributed to them.

Decision – keep

La Belle et la Bête by Madame de Villeneuve

(Beauty and the Beast for any non-French speakers) I do own this book so that’s a start.

For starters, I do own this book. In fact, I tried to read it a few months ago but I didn’t feel comfortable enough in my own French proficiency to get through it (let’s blame the fact I’ve not forcefully read anything in French for 4 years).

I do know this original story though because I have seen and liked the film adaptation that was released a few years ago.

If I do read it, I think I’ll be less ambitious and just pick up an English translation. This one can remain on my shelf until a later date.

Decision – go, but for the time being.

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray.

I do not know what to do with this book. It has been on my radar for a good few years now and it is still unread. I think there are so many books that deserve to be read that this one ends up being pushed further down the tbr.

I’m certain the only way I will read this particular book is if I have a physical copy, and as I don’t currently possess one, that might be a problem.

So….

Decision – go, but only until I finally purchase this book or the entire trilogy.

That’s my tbr cut down by 6 books for the present. Not bad.

And that will be that.

Have you read some of these books?
What are your thoughts?

Thanks for reading and have a good day!

  1. Eats Shoots and Leaves is a fun (and helpful) book but not one that’s intended to be read straight through IMO. A few pages at a time is the way to do it. I use the children’s edition in my class to teach about commas and it always makes the kids laugh a lot.

  2. I love Trudi Canavan!! She wrote seven books in that world and I loved them all 🙂

If you plan to read them all I recommend saving The Magician’s apprentice until last, as it has spoilers for the other six books.

Thanks for this timely post, as it has reminded me I started this meme and then got sidetracked, my TBR is piling up again.

    1. I didn’t realise there were 7 books! Thanks for the rec. I think I have been told that before so I will wait and read it last.

Hope you continue doing this meme.
