Books Without Romance

This is my first T5W for a while and I’m glad that there are some good topics coming up that I can hopefully contribute to.

Today’s topic is one of them and it is books without romance. This is one topic that I am rather vocal on because I think it is important to have books that don’t always deal with romance, or just have it as a secondary plot device. I personally get annoyed with the constant number of books, particularly YA Contemporaries, that have romance at the heart of the story (no pun intended) so to find all these books is fabulous.

Anyway, I will quit the rambling and get on with it.

Since these two are part of the same duology, I am putting them together. There is no need for romance in this epic story and it shows. There might be a little something in Our Dark Duet but it is nothing compared to the brilliance and action-packed plot that VE Schwab has crafted.

And if there wasn’t enough VE Schwab on this blog already at the moment, here’s another one of her books that I think is also predominantly romance free:

This was the first book of hers that I ever read and it got me hooked onto her writing and aptitude for storytelling. The dual perspective is one of the best I’ve read and even though none of the characters are far from perfect, I love them all.

This is one contemporary I talked quite a lot about when I first started this blog, and even now it is still one of my favourites. I have a link here to an old post if you want details but no romance is needed for a YA like this. What it does have is a great family relationship and a subject matter that I’ve not really seen in YA fiction.

This is another one of those books that doesn’t need a romance because it is dealing with a much harder-hitting subject matter than a lot of other YA fiction novels. You can read my review of it here, but suffice to say it has two wonderful main characters and a lot of mixed emotions.

And that is that.

What books would you suggest?

Thanks for reading and have a good day!

  1. I appreciate books without romance, and also think it is important. This post makes me want to read This Savage Song even more. Vicious was AMAZING, and the only book I have read from V.E. Schwab, even though I own several of her books (including This Savage Song). I need to read them by the end of this year.

    1. I need to read A Conjuring of Light, I know I’ll enjoy it but because it is a chunky tome, I don’t feel like reading it at the moment. I do want to get around to reading it before the end of the year though because I love the Darker Shade of Magics trilogy.

And This Savage Song is certainly a good book. I didn’t think it was as good as it could have been but Our Dark Duet certainly made up for it.

    1. Me too. I don’t always mind romance but it cannot take over the entire plot of the book. If it does, I won’t read it.
