T5W – Favourite Minor Characters

Hello!

Welcome back to Top 5 Wednesday. If you want any information on the Goodreads group, then you can go here but basically it is a weekly meme whereby we pick 5 books or book-related things in relation to a particular topic that week.

This week we have favourite minor characters!
Although I’m not sure if a few of mine are a little more major than they are minor – depends on your point of view, I suppose. 😀

Anyway, I’m going to try and keep it to one character per book, series, and even chronicles just to widen the choice a little.

So without further ado let’s get started:

1# Ty Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices (Cassandra Clare)

I fell completely in love with his character in Lady Midnight because he is just one of the sweetest and honest characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading. He tells things as it is and that it is a great quality to have, even if it can be a little unnerving. What draws me to him is that he is invested in the Shadowhunter world but like Henry Branwell he wants to do things a little differently. In fact if Henry Branwell was a 21st Century Shadowhunter and not stuck in Victorian London, then I bet these two would have a great rapport and understand each other rather well. Anyway, he is a character I want to protect with all my heart, though since he is one of the most innocent of characters, I have a horrible feeling Cassie Clare won’t make that possible.

2# Eliza from The Bone Season (Samantha Shannon)

I didn’t really pay much attention to her in The Bone Season or The Mime Order, but I recently finished reading The Song Rising and she really stood out as one of my favourite characters. I’m not entirely convinced that she is now a minor character as her role has grown somewhat but I really like her and her belief in Paige to help bring down Scion rule. I gasped a little when I didn’t know what had happened to her near the end of Song Rising but luckily I didn’t feel the need to scream at Samantha Shannon for harming her.

3# Georgiana Darcy from Pride and Prejudice.  (Jane Austen)

Compared to a lot of the characters from this book, she is relatively minor. What I love is that she is the complete opposite of Lydia so when we get to the part of the book where she and Elizabeth meet, there is a natural chemistry and understanding between them. You can see her as being the quieter younger sister that Elizabeth craves because she knows that they can help and learn from each other without having conflicting forces between them. Georgiana is also relatively shy, mainly due to her protective upbringing and that is something I can relate to.

4# Seth from The Twilight Saga (Stephenie Meyer)

One reason why used to go back to these books a lot was due to the great cast of minor characters. I really liked them and Seth was certainly one of my favourites. Coming in properly during Eclipse, he shows himself to be someone who prides himself on standing up for his own beliefs and not following the crowd. In Breaking Dawn he makes the right decisions for him, and even if it goes against the other wolves, he knows that he has forged his own path. That is something I commend because it shows that he knows his own mind and he is not influenced by the prejudice of everyone else.

5# Eliza Jones from Dreams of Gods and Monsters (Laini Taylor)

Only appearing in this final book of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, I am definitely calling her a minor character, even if her role was a relatively significant one. Whilst the lack of knowledge into how she connected to the story was infuriating, she became a rather interesting character to follow. I liked that she was going through a similar experience to Karou in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, knowing that she was connected to something otherworldly but not truly convinced. I just wish she could have played a bigger role in the series.

And that is that.

Wow, I really struggled with today’s topic. I’ll post this and sods law being as it is, millions of other minor characters will come flooding back into my mind.

Gah.

Anyway, who are some of your favourite minor characters?

Thanks for reading and have a good day!
xx

  1. Ty is also one of my favorite characters, but for a weird reason; he’s the character I relate the most to in the Shadowhunter chronicles. I remember reading TMI, and getting to COHF, and thinking, “I relate to a ten year old boy more than any of the other characters…” and that has also remained in TDA.
Did you know Clare also loosely based him on her autistic stepbrother? That may be why he rings true in so many ways. I’m just impressed she can write such a diverse cast and make it feel natural and unforced.

    1. I don’t think it is weird. We can relate to any character regardless of their age! And I actually didn’t know that. I know I cheered to myself whilst reading the first few chapters of Lord of Shadows when Kit said to Julian that he was autistic because I felt that vibe throughout Lady Midnight. I don’t really remember him in COHF but then it has been a couple of years since I’ve read that.

      1. Yeah, I found it on her Tumblr. I thought that was really cool (and why Ty seems to ring true more than most autistic characters). It comes from experience. And Kit tells them that Ty is autistic? That’s cool! That’s nice that it’s been confirmed in canon.

      2. Oh I knew about her tumblr but I must have missed that. I also don’t use that site much anymore. Kit mentions it to Julian and he is completely oblivious because it is not really known about in the Shadowhunter world. I actually think it is handled well in LoS because Kit doesn’t force it. He understands why Ty does what he does and lets him do what makes them both comfortable. He also doesn’t throw the label around – it’s only that one mention. He sees Ty for who he is. And Kit and Ty have such an incredible and honest friendship! I’m looking forward to seeing how that develops.

    1. I want to protect Ty with every fibre of my being. I adore him so much. One of my cousins is autistic as well and although both she and Ty are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum, there’s something about him that reminds me of her.
